Auto Loss
What to do if you are involved in an automobile accident.
(We
recommend that you print this page and keep it in your glove compartment
along with your insurance information.)
This section of our Web site is dedicated to providing information
on what to do after you have been involved in an automobile accident.
We think you will find this step-by-step guide very helpful. Please
take some time and read through this information.
Step 1
The first few minutes after an accident are upsetting to all involved.
- The most important thing you can do is to stay calm.
- Obtain medical assistance immediately if there is anyone who needs
it.
- For safety reasons, everyone should move away from the vehicles
and reasonable steps should be taken to warn other motorists of potential
hazards.
- It is then important to call the police.
Step 2
The information you gather at the accident scene can speed up the claim
process tremendously. Although the police gather much of this information,
their reports are often not immediately available following an accident.
It is very helpful if you can obtain:
- Name, current address and home/work/cell telephone number of the
operator(s) of the other vehicle(s). It is also helpful if you obtain
the operator's driver's license number.
- Name, current address and home/work/cell telephone number of the
owner(s) of the other vehicle(s) involved.
- Insurance information for both the operator(s) and the owner(s)
of the other vehicle(s). You should obtain the name of the insurance
company, insurance agency, policy number and policyholder's name.
It is helpful if you ask to see the Insurance ID card(s).
- Name, current address and home/work/cell telephone number of passengers
in any vehicle involved.
- Name, current address and home/work/cell telephone number of any
witnesses who observed the accident.
- The street names of where the accident happened.
- It is also a good idea for you to write down some accident details
such as direction of travel, speed of vehicles involved and pre-accident
actions (e.g. did they brake, any horns sounded, did they swerve to
avoid accident).
Step 3
You should fully cooperate with the authorities and truthfully
answer their questions. However, in general, we recommend that you not
discuss how the accident occurred with the other party involved.
Step 4
It is important to notify Florida Auto Insurance as soon as possible
following an accident. We are here to assist you, and the sooner you
contact us the quicker we can begin the steps to process your claim
or answer your questions.
